It’s already week 15! I can’t believe it. The theme for this week is “Showers.” If it rained this week, I was inside and didn’t have a chance to see it. That means I went through my archives and found this photo from and engagement shoot I did back in 2010. I saw this puddle from an earlier rainfall and hit them with an off camera strobe to enhance their reflection in the water. Coming across this puddle during the shoot was a happy accident and ended up being one of my favorites from the session. After checking out my photo, head over to Patti’s blog to see her interpretation of “Showers.”

This week’s theme is laughter. It’s Thursday night again and I needed to quickly create a portrait around the theme. My original thought was to get a picture of my daughter laughing and light and edit it similar to Jill Greenberg’s “End Times” crying baby photo exhibition. It would be the contrast of laughing to crying. But our evenings are pretty busy, so my daughter didn’t have tine to stand in. That means it’s self-portrait time.

In this photo I actually had my wife put eye drops in my eyes to get me to look like I’m crying because I’m laughing so hard. Unfortunately the camera didn’t pick up the tears very well. I also found that when I was trying to do this on my own, my fake laughs looked ridiculously fake. I just needed my wife to stand just off camera and look at me while I was doing this and it made me actually laugh. The real laugh looked a lot better on camera. I’m not much of an actor. trying to keep with the editing style of Jill Greenberg’s photos I did the best I could with 30ish minutes in Photoshop.

Enjoy my picture then head over to Patti Crump’s blog to enjoy her picture.

Instead, I decided to post this portrait of Regis. Regis is a Harding student from Rwanda. I shot a quick video interview of him Thursday talking about his home country. I’ll try to see if I can post his interview online later this week. The story of the Rwandan people is a very dramatic one with lots of lost lives. But, their story is also very courageous, one that brings so much hope to struggling African countries. If you want to learn a little more about the Rwandan story and a non-profit organization that helps the Rwandans, feel free to watch the video I made last year below Regis’ portrait. Afterwards, make sure you go check out Anna’s photo for this week. Hopefully she was able to find something that actually fits this week’s theme

This past week I was given the honor of photographing an Arkansas celebrity. BJ Sams was who I spent my morning with for 2-3 years while I would get ready for work in the mornings. He co-anchored KTHV’s morning show for 11 years. He’s been broadcasting news in Arkansas for more than 50 years. I wasn’t sure what to expect when preparing to meet with him Wednesday afternoon. I’ve worked with my share of news personalities and was ready for anything. He was very kind, easy to work with, and interesting to talk to. He has my highest respect.
This shoot was set up specifically for the cover story of Inspired, a new Arkansas magazine about to be released. Going into this shoot I had a vision of specific shots I wanted to execute, and I had the help of friend and fellow photographer, Eric Holmes, to help me out. I wanted BJ to come and go as quickly as possible as not to inconvenience him. We went through the entire shoot in about 30 minutes. Even after we wrapped it up and I told him he could leave, he hung around and visited with us for awhile. What a cool guy!

I used a mixture of strobe and natural light throughout the shoot.
This was shot on January 22nd at 7:30pm. It was dark outside and if I remember correctly, we were under a tornado watch. The storm clouds seemed very ominous.

This week’s theme is “Lion.” I understand the idea behind the theme since this is the beginning of March, but it was a little difficult to come up with an idea. I was tossing ideas around in my head, but none turned out to be practical at the moment. I decided to take a walk outside around my office and find someone interesting to photograph. I watched an interview earlier this week with Zack Arias. He’s a very successful editorial and commercial portrait photographer based in Atlanta. I’ve followed his work for several years now and he has always been an inspiration not only with his photography work, but also with his artistic philosophy. He emphasized the point to photograph what is available to you locally. When he mentioned portraits, he recommended that photographers need to find “characters” to photograph. That’s exactly what I did today. I walked around until I found a “character” to photograph. After a couple portraits, I told him about my 52 week photography project and this week’s theme. I asked him to act like a lion and I snapped the picture below.

This was very fun for me and something I need to start doing more often. I have a very difficult time approaching people and asking to take their portrait. Hopefully it will get easier with time. Let me know what you think about my picture by commenting below, then head over to Patti Crump’s blog to see her version of this week’s theme.

I must say that I’ve been very blessed and have not felt alone in a very long time. Yesterday was my birthday and it was nice to be reminded of how much I’m loved.

I’m kind of stretching on the theme with this photo. It was a shoot I did yesterday for a Searcy jeweler. I photographed several of their engagement rings. I guess people that buy these rings are ready to make a lifetime commitment and plan to never be alone again. Yeah, see… kind of a stretch. Enjoy!

I’m cracking up at my picture right now. This week’s theme was “together.” I had a whole different idea planned for this weeks image. I even shot my idea, but the image below only came to fruition after I sat down at the computer to edit. I love taking the theme and trying to put a different spin to it. This is a composite of me and my wife. I think we’ll order a large print and hang it up in our living room xD
